How to Build a Floor to Ceiling Bookshelf?
Here is how you can build a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf:
Create the sides of the shelving unit by ripping a plywood sheet down into 2 pieces that measure 10 ¾ inches wide by 8 feet long. This width will make the depth of the shelf exactly 1 foot once the backer and front trim are attached.
To rip the plywood, use a table or circular saw.
Make the horizontal boards by ripping plywood pieces to a width of 10 ¾ inches. Before you cut them to length, rip the remaining plywood sheet into 2 more full 8-foot pieces.
Cut the 2 ripped plywood boards into pieces that are 30 inches long. Do this with a circular saw. This will give you 6 pieces.
You need to have one horizontal shelf piece span the top of the shelving unit, and the other must sit against the floor. You can decide where the remaining 4 pieces go.
After you figure out the layout for the remaining pieces, mark the front edge of the 2 vertical sides using a tape measure and make a corresponding mark in the centre of the front edge of the shelf pieces. This will help you line up the two markups when it comes time to attach the shelves.
Align the edge of a horizontal board with the top side of a vertical piece. Hold tightly in place, drill three equidistant pilot holes using a countersink through the outside of the vertical board and into the end of the horizontal board.
Apply a layer of wood glue to the end of a horizontal piece and the corresponding spot on the vertical board.
Press into place and screw the boards together using 2-inch wood screws until the screw heads sit just below the surface. Wipe away extra glue and repeat this process on the other side of the top, then again for the bottom piece.
Use the marks made before to align the shelf pieces. Use the same drill, glue and screw method.
Once constructed, rip the backer to size using a table or circular saw.
Apply wood glue on the edge of all vertical and horizontal boards and lay the backer on top of the shelf.
Drill pilot holes and screw into place. Place each screw every 10 to 12 inches.
Flip the shelf unit over and repeat the prior steps to build the shelving united s needed.
This is how to build a floor to ceiling bookcase.
