Hello. I saw you asking how to apply wood veneer to MDF and I can answer your question. Applying wood veneer to an MDF is a long process and needs a lot of expertise and patience. So, read the steps only if you have an idea of this process and can be patient. Otherwise, call a professional instead.

Steps to Apply Wood Veneer to MDF

  1. Start by measuring the dimensions of your MDF accurately.

  2. Then, cut your veneer with a knife slightly larger than the MDF. This cut size of the veneer makes it easier to trim later. You should look for an overlap of about 1 inch on all sides.

  3. If you are using more than one sheet of veneer, number them in a certain order to keep the same direction of the grain and grain alignment.

  4. For contact cement, use a roller or brush to coat both the back of the veneer and the MDF’s surface with a thin layer of glue.

  5. Ensure the veneer and the MDF are completely covered without excess that could form lumps. If you are using wood glue instead, apply a good amount, but with a thin layer and apply it evenly.

  6. Lay the veneer gently in place on top of the substrate. Ensure it lines up properly with any pre-marked center lines. Press down firmly from the center outward to remove air bubbles.

  7. Use clamps, scrap wood or a veneer press to hold everything in position while the adhesive cures. If you’re using clamps, cut a piece of waxed paper and ensure it is cut to satisfaction before sliding the waxed paper between the clamp and veneer to prevent sticking.

  8. Once the adhesive has cured, use a knife to trim the excess veneer. Lightly sand any rough edges of your veneer with a 220-grit sandpaper. Ensure not to sand too aggressively as it might scratch it.

  9. Lastly, apply varnish or lacquer.

I hope this helps.
