I recently renovated my home, so I have an idea about the minimum space required for staircase. I can share my insights about the same.
How Much Space Required for Staircase?
I got to know that according to the Indian National Building Code, the minimum area for staircase in a residential building must have a minimum width of 3 feet, 6 inches, and its treads must be at least 10 inches wide without nosing and 10 14 inches wide if nosing is needed.
There must be 21 stairs, 20 treads, and roughly 14 feet of stringer to climb in order to reach a ceiling or floor that is 12 feet high.
Determining the minimum space required for staircase is crucial for safe and functional architectural design. Factors like building codes, building type, and user needs influence the dimensions. Careful planning ensures that staircases not only meet safety standards but also contribute to the overall functionality and aesthetics of a space.

As a civil engineer, I can tell you the space required for staircase usually depends on the type of staircase. L-shaped, spiral, and straight staircases all need a different amount of space. However, on average, a standard staircase needs about 30 square feet of space above and below it. I have shared the calculation process below for your reference.
How to Find the Area Needed for Staircase?
You must take the following measurements to determine the minimum area required for staircase:
From one side to the other, measure the steps' width.
From the top of the first step to the bottom of the last, measure the height.
From front to back, measure the depth of each step.
With those three measurements in hand, you can use this easy calculation to determine how wide the stairs must be:
(Width + Height + Depth) x 2 + 9 inches
You can get the minimal staircase area required by this calculation. However, you may require even more space based on your unique home layout, landings or turns in the staircase design, and local building codes.

A few months ago, I was planning the layout of my new house. As a part of that, I also needed to understand the area required for a staircase since ours is a multiple story house. So I looked up the area needed for staircase and I found out that around 30 sq ft. area needs to be taken under consideration for this.
What is the Space Required for Staircase in Feet?
From my research, I found that a normal area required for staircase in feet is about 30 sq ft. of space above and below. I figured that this dimension guarantees enough space for secure and comfortable use.
I also got to know that a staircase should be at least 3 to 6 inches wide to facilitate easy navigation. I discovered that in order to provide enough footing, the treads, which is the area you step on, should be at least 10 inches wide.
As required by the Indian National Building Code, I learned that a comfortable rise of roughly 7 inches is required for each step, for my house staircase.
I wanted to avoid a straight drop that would restrict access to other rooms, so I also took extra area for landings into account while designing my staircase. This extra space improved the use and look of my design as well.
This is all about the minimum space for stairs. I hope this helps!

Getting an idea about what should be constructed in how much space is really hard. I only got to know about such things when my father started building another house. We all were determined to make the bedrooms large as much as possible accompanied by large windows as well. The builder knew everything about it but once came and asked my father how much area should be given for the staircase and that is when I started to learn things in detail. I asked my father what is the minimum space for staircase? He said it is you who should decide that. Everyone might not be comfortable in the same space but of course there is an approx measure for it. Let me share with you everything here.

How much area required for staircase?Building a staircase depends on how much area you have. However the minimum area required for staircase is 30 sq ft of space above and below the staircase. This measurement is the most common dimension where the ceiling is supposed to be 8 feet and the staircase width is 3 feet and horizontal space varies between 9 to 10 feet.
If you leave this amount of area, the staircase built will be very convenient to use. But if you think you lak this much of dspace, just go for the spiral staircase. They need a smaller area and can fit almost anywhere.
What are the types of staircase? You can build a variety of staircase like:
Straight
L- shaped
Winder
U- shaped
Spiral
Curved
Bifurcated
Ladder.
It is better to ask the builder about it since they can explain it to you vividly, especially after knowing the minimum space for staircase.
