No. Living or building a house under a high-voltage power line is not safe. These power lines carry a lot of electricity, so the area around them is called the “right of way.” This space must stay empty to keep people safe. If you live or build inside this space, you face the following dangers.

  • The first danger is electric shock.

  • A wire can break, fall, or touch a building during storms or if it becomes weak. If this happens, it can cause shocks, fire, or even death. That is why the government sets a minimum distance between houses and overhead power lines. Builders must follow this rule, but many places still do not, which increases the risk of accidents.

    • The second danger comes from the electric and magnetic fields around high-voltage lines.

    • These are called Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) fields. Being close to them for a long time may cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, tiredness, and sleep problems. Long-term exposure may increase the risk of cancer. Pregnant women may face more risks, like miscarriage, early birth, or developmental problems in the baby. People can also get a shock if they touch metal objects that pick up electricity from the nearby field.

Because of these dangers, power departments and building rules say that overhead lines should not cross over any building, and no new building should be constructed under these lines.

If a line is near your home, you must follow the safety distance given by the Central Electricity Authority and the National Building Code of India. Keeping this distance helps reduce both short-term and long-term risks. Hope this gives you a clear idea about the topic.
