When you turn off the water supply, the pressure doesn’t drop immediately. Sometimes, you can see leaks because of the residual pressure in the system, especially when you have any weak spots. I faced this issue in my home and planned to consult a plumber. He told me the leaks were because of the faulty valves, which needed to be replaced. He also explained why pipe leaks when water is turned off.
What are the Causes of Water Turned Off Pipe Still Leaking?
The plumber told me such leaks are common in older homes with aging pipes. Here are some other reasons for pipe leaks he mentioned.
Temperature Changes: I learned that sometimes pipes can expand and contract because of a change in temperature. When hot water is shut off, the cooling pipes may contract, and this leads to stress at weak points, which can cause leakage.
Malfunctioning Valves: It is what happened in my case. The plumber told me that a faulty shut-off valve will prevent the water flow from stopping. So, a slow drip can cause leaks in some areas where the pipe is weakest.
Water Hammer: Another reason he mentioned was when the water is suddenly turned off, the momentum of the moving water can disrupt the flow and create a shock wave. You can call it a water hammer, which leads to leakage.
Damaged Pipe: If a pipe is damaged earlier, it can worsen the leaks when the supply is turned off. I learned this usually happens because of a sudden change in thermal pressure.
This is all the plumber told me. I hope you get an idea now on why leaks happen when water is turned off. If you’re facing this issue, call a plumber and get it inspected for better clarity.
