When I planned the interior design of my home, I always wanted to opt for wood veneer but it was far above my budget. I too had this question in mind: why is wood veneer so expensive? Discussing this with my interior designer, I learned that wood veneers give furniture a rich, natural appearance since they are created from actual timber, as opposed to artificial laminates. So, it’s expensive, because of their decorative value, authenticity, and sourcing difficulties.

Are Wood Veneers Expensive?

My interior designer highlighted 3 main reasons why wood veneers are expensive:

  1. Not Your Average Wood: Sheesham, oak, maple, rosewood, and other rare and expensive trees are the source of veneers, which are tiny slices of genuine wood. These woods are renowned for having distinctive textures and grains that are difficult to find in stores.

  2. High Costs and Permits: Legal tree-cutting needs security deposits of more than Rs. 34,500 for individuals and Rs. 57,000 for businesses. A portion of this can only be refunded upon compensatory plantation.

  3. Decorative Appeal: To improve furniture, veneers are often bonded on plywood or MDF. They are visually stunning. They are widely used by interior designers to improve the aesthetic appeal of upscale spaces.

This is actually a high end interior finish that is used in hotels, workplaces, and luxury homes.
