I was on a family vacation and I visited a hotel in Delhi, where I noticed that the hotel lacked the 13th floor. I pondered why is there no 13th floor in hotels? Triskaidekaphobia, as absurd as it may appear, is a very genuine fear for many people. In fact, several studies have found that it can have a negative impact on one's health! It has been proven that people who are terrified of the number 13 have higher levels of tension and anxiety.

The roots of this superstition are murky at best. According to one hypothesis, it dates back to the Middle Ages, when people were terrified of witches and evil spirits. Because it was associated with these dark forces, the number 13 was regarded to be unlucky. Another hypothesis claims that the superstition began with the Last Supper, which had a total of 13 persons present. The betrayer of Jesus, Judas Iscariot, was the 13th person to seat at the table. As a result, the number 13 has come to be associated with bad fortune and betrayal. Hence, this is why there is no 13th-floor in buildings.

This is another manifestation of the superstition around the number 13. To avoid any potential bad luck, the 13th-floor button is simply left off in many buildings.

Surprisingly, this belief isn't restricted to India. It's also extremely common in other parts of the world. Many structures in Italy, for example, do not have a 13th floor. Because the number four is considered unlucky in China (because it sounds like the Chinese for "death"), many buildings will skip floors from the third to the fifth.
