I was annoyed to see my once-smooth walls covered in ugly blisters and bubbles. Paint bubbling is the term used to describe this problem. It happens when air pockets expand or bubble out of the paint when it separates from the surface. During that time, I researched the primary causes of paint bubbling on wall after rain, and here is what I found.

What are the Causes of Interior Paint Bubbling After Rain?

The main cause of interior paint bubbles following rain is moisture that has been retained beneath the paint layer, which can occur from leaks, excessive humidity, etc. Here are the common causes of paint bubbling on walls:

Moisture on the Painting Surface

When liquid moisture or water vapor seeps through the wall substrate, moisture infiltration occurs.

  1. When water or high humidity penetrates the surface, it may become trapped beneath the paint film.

  2. As the moisture evaporates, pressure builds, which causes the paint to blister and peel.

Solution:

Identify and rectify the moisture source to prevent paint blistering on walls caused by moisture. Look for leaks or sources of water seeping. In areas prone to high humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens, repair leaks and ensure sufficient ventilation. Additionally, before painting, give the surface enough time to cure completely.

Poor Surface Preparation

Paint bubbling is often caused by improper surface preparation before painting.

  1. Poor adherence between the paint and the substrate may arise from improper wall surface cleaning, patching, and priming.

  2. Painting on a damp surface or without sufficient sealing might retain moisture.

Solution:

To fix it, ensure the proper surface preparation is done before painting.

Apart from these 2 primary causes, it may also be caused by high humidity, dirty painting surface, skipping primer usage, and even choosing the wrong roller. It is best to hire a professional to fix this issue.
