From my experience, I must say moisture-resistant plywood sustains water damage. It may be appropriate for dry kitchen environments, but it is not recommended for locations with frequent water exposure.

In kitchen settings, delamination, edge swelling, and weakening of internal layers can result from exposure to steam, leaks, or splashes from sinks. Although MR plywood is more affordable and has greater strength than MDF or particle board, proper edge sealing and cautious installation are necessary for optimal performance.

In modular kitchens, water damage typically occurs when the base material and finishes are unable to tolerate spills, humidity, or regular cleaning. Standard particleboard, MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard), and lower-grade plywood are the most problematic materials for a modular kitchen. Also, identifying which types are not water-resistant helps you choose more durable options. I have shared the list below.

What are the Common Modular Kitchens and Materials Prone to Water Damage?

  • Standard Particleboard:

    It is made up of compressed wood chips and resins, which quickly absorb water. 

    • Regular mopping or even tiny leaks beneath the washbasin can lead to the board's expansion, crumbling, and structural weakening. 

    • It is only appropriate for low-budget or temporary setups with little exposure to water.

  • MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard):

    Modular kitchens made of MDF are prone to swelling when subjected to moisture, particularly in Indian kitchen conditions. 

    • It features a smooth surface that can be easily painted or laminated. However, its main issue is a lack of moisture resistance. 

    • MDF cabinets, if damaged, cannot be fixed and must be completely replaced.

  • Non-waterproof or Lower-Grade Plywood (MR Grade):

    MR-grade (Moisture Resistant) plywood, sometimes referred to as non-waterproof plywood, is used to build modular kitchens. Although it is superior to MDF, it is still susceptible to deterioration over time if boiling water-resistant (BWR) or boiling waterproof (BWP) coatings are not applied.

  • Poorly Sealed Joints and Edge Banding:

    Even good materials fail if water penetrates open edges or holes. It occurs due to cheap edge banding, improper laminate application, or a lack of sealing tape.

To prevent water damage in your kitchen, think about using aluminum, stainless steel, marine plywood, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) cabinets, or BWP (boiling water proof) plywood.
