A few months back, I rented an apartment and soon discovered that when renting an apartment what do you pay upfront. I basically had to pay the security deposit equivalent to 2 month’s rent. Apart from the security deposit, I also paid the rent agreement registration cost. These are typical one-time payments that legally legalise the tenancy.

When Renting an Apartment What to Pay Upfront?

  1. Security Deposit: A security deposit is a refundable sum that is usually equal to two months' rent and is kept by the landlord as insurance against damage or unpaid bills. It needs to be paid when the lease is signed.

  2. Cost of Rent Agreement Registration: The Indian Stamp Act of 1899 requires that the rental agreement be prepared and registered. This can be borne by the landlord or the tenant or both can split it.

One should be aware of these upfront costs to avoid any surprises while renting an apartment. I hope this helps!
