To safeguard your security deposit, take photos of the property's condition before relocating your possessions. Like you, I wanted to ensure that my security deposit was safe when I moved into a new rental apartment. One of my colleagues, who had experienced deductions for damages he did not cause, informed me what to take pictures of when moving in. I have shared those below.

What to Photograph During a Move-In Inspection?

  1. Take detailed photographs of the entire area. It includes walls, floors, ceilings, doors, windows, and cabinets.

  2. Take close-up photos of any scrapes, cracks, peeling paint, or stains on the wall.

  3. Add close-ups of corners, ceilings, and damp areas, if applicable.

  4. Take pictures of scratches, damaged tiles, loose flooring, and the countertop.

  5. Document fittings include locks, handles, hinges, and glass panels.

  6. Check that the doors and windows open and close properly. Photograph any rust or damage.

  7. Take clear photographs of the condition of items such as the stove, refrigerator, and washing machine.

  8. Capture clear photos of your water, gas, and electricity meter readings.

Save all of your pictures in a cloud drive or dated folder, then send your landlord a copy over WhatsApp for records.
