In case your water bill is incorrect, check your meter reading and look for leaks. If you discover an inconsistency, get in touch with your local water provider to understand and challenge it. Here is what to do if your water bill is wrong.

  • Inspect your water meters.

The water meter itself occasionally breaks. It may be outdated or broken. This could lead to an inaccurate water usage measurement.

  • Recheck your bill first.

Look for any significant discrepancies from your old bill or unexplained charges before submitting a complaint. Verify the reading on your water meter and compare it to the amount on your bill. Also, check penalties that were mistakenly added. To compare, take a clear picture of your meter reading.

  • Look for leakage.

Inspect the meter and turn off all of your home's water-using equipment. You have a water leakage if the dial continues to spin.

  • Contact your water board.

Bring the incorrect bill, meter images, and consumer number to the local water office for filing a complaint. Alternatively, you can make a complaint about "wrong meter reading/wrong bill" by calling your water board's customer care.

  • Ask for an inspection.

Request your water service provider to postpone your charge while they look into the problem. Send in a written complaint if necessary. Include your customer number, reason for the incorrect bill, images of the meter, and past invoices for comparison.

So, you can also register a complaint with the Consumer Forum if the water company is unable to resolve the issue. You can file a complaint regarding poor service, such as incorrect billing, under Sections 49 and 59.
