Summary
If your AC isn’t working, check the thermostat settings, power supply, and circuit breaker first. Clean or replace dirty air filters, clear blocked vents, inspect the drain line and pan, and clean the outdoor condenser. Reset the AC and test cooling. If issues persist, call a technician.

Here’s what to check when ac is not working;

  1. Check the Thermostat: Make sure the thermostat is set to either Auto or Cool rather than Heat. After lowering the temperature, give it a few minutes. If the room temperature does not drop or stays more than 2 to 3 degrees higher than the set temperature, move to the next step.

  2. Check the source of power: Check to see if the AC circuit breaker has tripped by opening the electrical panel. If necessary, reset it. Additionally, make sure the AC power switch next to the outdoor or indoor unit is switched on. Check the pilot light and gas supply for gas-based systems.

  3. Check and clean air filters: Unclean filters prevent cooling by obstructing airflow. Take out the filter, clean it, or replace it if it's dusty. Verify that no furniture or curtains are obstructing vents and registers. For optimal performance, change the filters every 60 to 90 days.

  4. Check the drain line and condensation pan: Check for water overflow in the drain pan. Empty it and remove any obstructions in the drain pipe if it is full. When the pan is full, many air conditioners switch off automatically; therefore, clearing it could bring it back to life.

  5. Check the Outdoor Condenser Unit: Switch off the electricity and clear the condenser coils of any dust, leaves, or grass. Use a water hose or brush to gently clean. Blocked coils lessen cooling and obstruct appropriate heat escape.

  6. Check Performance After Reset: Let the air conditioner run for a minimum of two hours after restarting it. See if the cooling becomes better.

If the AC still does not work, contact a qualified technician. Issues like refrigerant leaks, compressor faults, or electrical failures need expert repair.
