We got our skirting boards painted with satin paint, and that’s what most professional painters recommend. Last year, I was also confused like you and wondered what paint do you use for skirting boards? Initially, I planned on painting the boards by myself, but I wasn’t sure what kind of paint to go with, so my wife insisted on not taking any risk and hiring a painter for the job. I’d like to share the entire painting process.

What Paint is Used for Skirting Boards?

So, the painter told us that there are mainly three types of paint recommended for skirting boards. These are as follows.

  1. Gloss: We got to know that gloss offers a high-shine finish and they’re easy to clean, which is why they are ideal for high-traffic areas. One disadvantage of this is it highlights imperfections.

  2. Eggshell: The painter told us that eggshell paints provide a low sheen finish and they’re also less reflective and give a more subtle appearance.

  3. Satin: These kinds of paint provide a semi-gloss finish which is easier to clean and maintain than matte. But it’s less shiny than gloss paint. This is the ideal paint for skirting boards because it offers a balance between sheen and durability.

So, that’s how I learned what paint is used on skirting boards.

How to Paint Skirting Boards?

Before painting, the painter started preparing the surface by covering the floor with a dustsheet. Then, he masked the edges of the board with a masking tape to prevent any mess. Here are some steps he followed.

  1. He used fine sandpaper and sanded the surface. Then he wiped down the surface with a degreaser.

  2. To fill the gaps, he applied a sealer along the edge of the skirting board. This gave a neat finish.

  3. Next, he started painting and finally removed the tape.

So, that’s all about the painting process. I hope I can answer your questions.
