We bought an AC last year but for the past few months, it was not working properly. My mother called the electrician to know the reason why it is not working properly and learnt that it is due to voltage fluctuation. The electrician asked us to buy a stabiliser to protect all the appliances in our house. I know many of you might not be knowing what is voltage dip meaning here. Read this answer to know everything.

What is meant by voltage dip?

Voltage dip refers to the temporary drop in the supply of electricity or voltage. If the voltage (Uf) goes below a threshold set at 90% of the declared supply voltage (Uc) it is called a voltage dip.

  How to prevent voltage dip?

You can actually prevent or at least decrease the chance of voltage dip by

  • Decrease the temperature of the conductor

  • Decreasing the length of the conductor

  • Increasing the resistance power of the conductor

  • Reducing the power load of the conductor

In our case, we were asked to not set the AC below 18 degrees. If you have a stabiliser things will work out perfectly fine for you but if you do not have one, use the appliances carefully.

What happens when a voltage is low?

An appliance will fail to work properly if the voltage is low. You can detect when a voltage is low, especially by watching a fan. If there is a dip in the voltage, the fan will rotate slowly. So if an appliance performs slowly or abnormally, be sure there is a voltage issue.

I hope the meaning of voltage dip is clear to you now.
