A tenant needs to notify the landlord before leaving a rental property, and this is known as the minimal notice period. The tenant minimum notice period is determined by the length of the lease, the nature of the agreement, and certain terms stated in the rental agreement. For instance, tenants must give one month's notice or pay one month's rent in lieu of notice for tenancies under a year.

What is the Minimum Notice Period for Tenants?

  1. Tenancy more than one year: If the tenant has been there for more than a year, they must offer two months notice or pay two months rent in advance.

  2. Fixed-period tenancy: Tenancy terminates automatically at the end of the predetermined term; no notice is needed.

  3. Employment-based tenancy: In the event where the rental unit was provided to the tenant for residential use because the tenant was hired by the landlord, the tenancy will end when the tenant leaves the company.

It is best to check your rent agreement, or discuss it with your landlord for the minimum notice period to be served.
