We recently installed a double rod in our new closet to maximise storage space. Earlier, we had measured our single hanging rod for height and it was around 66 inches from the floor to the middle of the rod.
However, we wanted to expand our closet space, so we planned to install a double rod. So, I have mentioned below the standard closet rod height along with some factors that you must consider while measuring the height.
What is the Standard Height Hanging Rod?
There are two kinds of hanging rods - single and double. So, before you decide the height, there are some factors that you must know. We learnt about it from a professional who helped us install the rods.
Type of Clothing
Some clothes will fit in the single rod while some of them might need double rods. Clothes like suits, blouses, and t-shirts have varying storage needs, so you might need double rods to hang both short and long clothes.
Accessibility
The rods should be at a height where you can easily reach. One tip is to save the middle and eye-level spaces for the clothes you use the most.
Storage Needs
If you have a lot of bags, shoes, and winter wear, such as jackets, trench coats, etc, you will need extra space and so, you can add extra shelves or rods to maximise the space.
So, considering all these factors, a single rod will come about 66 inches. And, in case of double rods, the top rod is usually set at 6 feet 8 inches from the floor to the centre. I find this perfect for shirts and blouses. Lower rod, on the other hand, sits at about 3 feet 4 inches from the floor. We use it for pants, skirts, and shorter items.
