Previously I used to believe that estate meant only a mansion or large house where rich people live but recently I got to know that estate meaning is not confined only to houses or mansions or houses only. The estate comprises the net worth of an individual be it land, real estate, cash, or other assets. It is the personal property of an individual at any point in time alive or dead.
Why is it called estate?After you have known what is the meaning of estate, you must also know the reason to call it an estate. It is an estate as the profits from its produce and rents are enough to support the household in the house at its centre, usually known as the manor house. Therefore the estate may refer to all other houses, lands, or cottages and more in the same ownership as the mansion itself, covering more than one manor.
What is estate duty?Estate duty refers to the type of duty when an asset is transferred after the death of a person. It is levied on the assets left behind by the deceased person and it is imposed on the person’s estate in its entirety. This estate tax must be paid by the executor or successor to the government.
In India, estate duty or estate tax does not exist and comes under direct tax only. It was abolished during the tenure of Rajiv Gandhi in 1985.
