I always found it really difficult to understand what is the cost of 1 unit electricity in Bihar because the tariff structure was really detailed and complex. But I have an idea of the unit electricity cost in Bihar and hence shared with you below in a very simple way.

What is 1 Unit Electricity Price in Bihar?

As far as I am aware, Bihar's electricity rates and tariffs are updated annually on April 1st. So, there have been some adjustments to electricity rates this year as well. The Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission's (BERC) tariff order for 2023–2024 shows a considerable increase in unit rates, up almost 24% from the previous year.

On the other hand, in order to offset the increase in unit rates, the Bihar government has also raised the subsidy.

I am quite well aware of the domestic and non-domestic prices of NBPDCL & SBPDCL for FY 2023-24. Follow the table below to understand the approved tariff of different categories of consumers for NBPDCL & SBPDCL.

Energy charges (per unit use) and fixed charges are both included in Bihar's electricity bill. In simple terms, the fixed charges in electricity bill in Bihar is a monthly mandatory fee that is dependent on the customer's approved load and connection type. As per the recent news, Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, had said that household customers would receive free power up to 125 units starting on August 1, 2025.

What is the Electricity Bill in Bihar Per Unit?

As per the tariff proposed by the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission are:

  1. The monthly fixed rate for home low-tension DS-I customers (0 to over 100 units) is roughly Rs. 20 per kW.

  2. The monthly fixed fee for demand-based DS-II connections (units 1–200) is Rs. 40 per kW.

Customers pay per-unit charges, which differ based on consumption slabs, in addition to the fixed charge. Although applicable fixed costs may still be imposed, families using less than 125 units per month will not be subject to any unit charges under the new plan.

The goal of this program is to lessen the financial strain on the state's lower- and middle-income households.

The Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) sets the electricity rates in Bihar. For both residential and commercial customers, the Bihar electricity bill per unit rate is divided into usage slabs. I recently came across an article published in a local newspaper about Bihar\'s plan to implement new electricity pricing starting April 1. As per this, one must pay various fees for the morning, evening, and night.

What are the Key Points of the New Electricity Bill Rate in Bihar?

Customers will pay regular rates from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. under the Time on Day tariff, 80% of the energy charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 20% extra during peak hours (5 p.m. to 11 p.m.). During lean hours, electricity will be 20% less expensive. The revised prices will take effect on April 1, 2025, and the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission will hold public hearings in five cities, including Patna, from February 8–20.

  1. All categories will see no price increases, with the exception of the high tension special service category.

  2. Customers having 11/33 kV HTSS connections would see an increase of Rs 1 per unit.

  3. Green traffic will be billed at a rate of Rs 1.17 per unit in addition to the energy fee when the power provider requests renewable energy.

  4. Customers of HT will receive a load factor incentive. They would receive a discount of 30 paise per unit on the overall energy consumption if they consume more than 60% of the load.

  5. Users will benefit from the Time on Day price if their maximum demand exceeds 10 kW, excluding agricultural connections.

Now it is best that you wait till April 1st to get the exact Bihar electricity price per unit as per the new pricing regime announced by the government.

My native place is Bihar, and my parents live there, so I am aware of almost every event happening there. Just a few months ago, I checked the updated 1 unit electricity cost in Bihar from a newspaper. Early this year, the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission announced an increase in rates of 24.10%. The charges increased by more than two times, and the electricity slab rates have been reduced from three to two. If you do not know what the electric bill per unit in Bihar is, you can find it here.

What is the Bihar electric bill per unit?

Former Slab Rate:

Previously, domestic consumers in rural areas of Bihar had to pay Rs 6.10 per unit for the consumption of 50 units of electricity, and if one consumed more than this, they had to pay Rs 6.40 per unit.

The urban residents need to pay Rs 6.10 per unit for up to 100 units of electricity consumption, and above 100, the rate is Rs 6.95 per unit.

Current Slab Rate:

After revision, the new rate is Rs 7.57 against the existing rate of Rs 6.10 for 100 units of electricity consumption. For 101 units to 200 units, the rate has become Rs 9.08 per unit. If one consumes more than 200 units, a charge of Rs 7.40 per unit will be levied.
