I got reminded of a dialogue from the movie Jab We Met when I read your question. You know where Kareena (Geet) says, “Ek to ye hill aur mountain ke beech fark kya hai mujhe aaj tak samajh nahin aayi,” mine was the same case as hers until I moved in with my husband to a new apartment. I finally understood what is the difference between sofa and couch. Let me lay it out for you here.
Honestly, there is not much of a difference. For a sofa, you can say that is a raised bench-like platform with cushions to sit on. Couch however, is a more laid back and chill setting. You can lay on it and not necessarily just sit on it.
