A daughter’s right to her father’s self-acquired property depends on whether the father has mentioned it in his will or not. If the father dies intestate, both sons and daughters have an equal claim on the self-acquired property. However, in 2022, the Supreme Court ruled that daughters have the right to inherit their parents’ self-acquired property and any other property of which they are absolute owners. This rule applies even in cases where the parents of a daughter died intestate before the codification of the Hindu Succession Act, 1956.
