I am planning to build a 4 BHK house in my native place. So, I started checking the standard room size in feet for each part of the house, like the hall, kitchen, and bedrooms. During my research, I found that the standard size for a master bedroom is usually 14x16 or 16x20 feet. I also looked into the ideal size for the second bedroom, kids’ room, and guest room, which I have included here for your reference.

From my research, I wasn’t able to find any concrete number, and thus, I contacted a civil engineer. I asked him about the bed room size in meters. He told me it would be around 20.18 sq. m., which would be around 224 sq. ft. He also told me that this is the size of master bedrooms but could change for other bedroom types.

Recently, I visited a home architect to get my house designed. While talking to him, I requested that my bedroom should be a bit bigger than the other rooms. However, the architect pointed out that this could affect the overall layout, as it wouldn’t align with standard bedroom sizes. Following this, I asked him about the standard bedroom size in feet in India. I have added the information he provided me below.

What is the Minimum Bedroom Size in India?

Bedroom Type Dimensions/Size (in metres)

Standard Bedroom

Around 3.5 x 3.5 metres

Master Bedroom

At least 3.66 x 4.88 metres

Secondary/Guest Bedroom

Around 3.05 x 3.66 metres

Kids' Bedroom

Around 3.05 x 3.05 metres

These are the standard size of a bedroom in meters. These sizes provide a good balance between comfort and space optimisation for typical Indian homes. As per this table, I have decided to go with the standard bedroom dimension while designing my bedroom.

What is the Standard Size of Door and Windows?

When we were building our new home, my spouse asked the builder about the standard bedroom size in meters. He said, bedrooms in India typically measure 4.33 square meters, or 132 square feet. He further mentioned that this size can change based on your location and the type of bedroom you desire.

What is the Standard Bedroom Size in India?

Our builder told us that a bedroom in India is typically 132 square feet in size. This size enables a cosy sleeping area with enough space for a bed and a few standard pieces of furniture, such as a dresser or closet.

  • He said a 12 by 16-foot (3.6 by 4.8-meter) master bedroom is very common in India. This provides ample space for a king or queen bed, dresser, nightstands, desk, and walking area.

  • Next thing to note according to him was that the ideal bedroom size in India for the guest room or second bedroom may be smaller, around 10 feet by 12 feet, or 120 square feet.

  • He also told us that we could construct a 10-by-10-foot bedroom for our children. Even though there could be less space for furnishings and less flexibility, this will provide a comfortable sleeping space.

At last, he informed us that it is crucial to select the proper bedroom's dimensions so that it fits perfectly into the house's overall layout. I hope you get an idea of the average bedroom size in India.
