What is Sharia Law in India?

I have been reading about sharia laws for a few weeks and I am going to share what I understood so far.  Here you go!

Sharia means the Muslim way of life. Sharia tells the right Islamic behaviour. Sharia law in India is based on Quran and Sunnah (the teachings of Prophet Muhammad). Over the period of time, many principles in Sharia law are set forth by Muslim interpreters and scholars, which are made to solve such matters which are not specified in Quran or Sunnah or are related to the modern day life. These new laws are known as Fiqh.

So, we can say that Sharia Laws or Islamic Laws are not as Adamant or rigid as they are thought to be. They have actually changed a lot by the changing times and needs. Sharia law in India is actually the mixture of traditional Islamic principles, customs, fiqh, European law and Indian civil law post independence.

Sharia courts are not actual courts but are kind of counselling centres, which are mostly approached by poor and women who want to resolve matters related to marriage, maintenance and divorce. Qazis preside over Sharia courts. These courts are popular due to their accessibility and they are inexpensive and informal.

Sharia laws are acceptable under our Constitution as long as it is neither against the spirit of the Constitution nor violates fundamental rights.
