I’m sure you must have given your residence proof for one or the other thing. I have done that too but I never actually knew exactly what is residence proof. Out of curiosity, I did some digging and found out the following details.

What is proof of residency?
Your whole name and address must be written on a proof of residence, which is a document proving your address. You must provide a proof of residence, which can either show your permanent address or your communication address, in order for the government to issue you various types of identification documents. You may use any of the following documents for the type of identification evidence you are applying for or updating:
Aadhar Card, PAN Card, Passport
Bank/Post Office Statement/Passbook
Passport, PAN Card, or Aadhar are your other alternatives, depending on what you're applying for. For instance, you can use your passport or your PAN card as residence verification when you apply for an Aadhar card.
Insurance Policy
Ration Card, Voter ID, Driving License
Property Tax Receipt (not older than 1 year)
Disability ID Card/Handicapped Medical Certificate
Any of the following documents, not older than 3 months:
Telephone Landline Bill
Electricity Bill
Credit Card Statement
Water Bill
Gas Connection Bill
Voter ID
Ration Card, Passport, Driving License
Bank/Kisan/Post Office Passbook
Income Tax Return/Assessment Order
Post from the Postal Service was received or delivered at the provided address in the applicant's name.
Most recent water, phone, electricity and gas connection bills for that address, either in the applicant's name or the name of his close family members like parents, etc.
Driving License
Life Insurance Policy
Ration Card, Voter ID Card
Post Office/Bank Passbook (indicating residential address)
Payslip issued by any office in the Central/State Government or a local body
House Tax Receipt, Marriage Certificate, Income Tax Returns
Ration Card
For the purpose of acquiring a Ration Card, different states have varied rules regarding the proof of residence needed. However, the following common documents are recognised:
A registration deed, an allotment letter, a power of attorney, a house tax receipt, etc., if you are the owner of a house.
If you are a renter, the landlord's NOC, the rental agreement, etc
This is what is residence proof.
