What is a portico?
The word portico comes from Italy. It means porch. But if we talk about India, the word simply means Verandah- a place where you can take your cup of tea and relax looking at nature or talk to family members, maybe share a laugh or two. This is what I feel would be the definition of what is portico in house.
What is the meaning of portico?
A portico or a front Verandah elevates the beauty of the house itself. You can decorate a portico in your own way and enhance the beauty of the house. There are different types of portico designs you can choose by consulting your builder, but I will share my three favourite types of portico as of today.
- Minimalist Portico
A simple verandah is the common type of portico we see in India. The clean barrier- the exterior is the perfect porch we like which turns out to be an excellent balcony design along with the tilted roof. It is simple yet it is classy.
- Traditional Columns
In the old days people used to decorate their portico with pillars, and I won't deny that these balconies have their own unique beauty. I have seen a verandah with rectangular windows and Warli art on the exterior wall. The building was a little bit old but I was amazed looking at the beauty of the architecture.
- Tiled Portico
One of the popular yet beautiful portico is the tiled portico. The simple two-level suburban homes usually borrow this design and the entrance area gets lit up just by the porch itself. I have seen a tiled porch and on it, the homeowner decorated Madhabilata leaves. The entire house looked so pretty!
