Hello Laxmi. The GST on transportation of household goods by road ranges from mil to 18 percent, depending on the mode of transport and the services. When it comes to transporting goods via road and a consignment note is issued by a GTA or the Goods Transport Agency, the rate is 5 percent if Input Tax Credit is not availed. If ITC is availed, the rate jumps to 12 percent. There is more information on this, which I will share with you below.

Talking further about the GST levied by a GTA, the rate varies significantly based on the type of goods being transported and the consignment value. I am sharing a table that will help you more.

It is important to be aware of the GST or Goods and Services Tax. Just recently, I came to learn about the updated list of GST rate on transport of goods by road. However, this GST is not levied on all goods; for example, there is no GST on relief materials, pulses, milk, and other food grains, agricultural products and others. Let me share the list of goods where GST is levied and also where GST is not levied.

What is the GST on Transport of Goods by Road?

The GST on goods transport by road depends on the type of transportation happening. Here is a list of the type of transport and their GST rates:

Type of Transport  GST Rate

Transport by A/C contract carriage/stagecoach

5%

Transport by radio taxi and similar services

5%

Rental services for road vehicles, including cars, buses, and coaches

18%

AC and First Class train tickets

18%

Transport by radio taxi and similar services

5%

This is the basic transportation of goods by road under GST list I am aware of.

The

goods where GST on transport is not levied

are:

  • Relief materials

  • Pulses, milk, salt, flour, or other food grains

  • Products from agriculture

  • Organic manure

  • Transporting military or defence equipment

  • Newspapers or magazines that are registered with the Registrar of Newspapers

  • If the amount charged for goods is less than Rs 1,500

  • For transporting personal or household goods

  • For transporting goods of unregistered persons

I hope you now have some clarity about where and where not GST on the transportation of goods is levied. These rates change quite frequently so I would advise you to verify them with an expert if you need to.
