What is the government's Amendment Bill on emoluments?
On December 10, 2012, Sushil Kumar Shinde presented the Governors (Emoluments, Allowances and Privileges) Amendment Bill, 2012, in the Lok Sabha.
The Governors (Emoluments, Allowances and Privileges) Act, 1982 is being modified by the proposed bill.
Every Governor is eligible for an emolument of Rs.1,10,000 per month under the Act. Former governors only qualify for health coverage.
The Bill aims to offer former governors additional pension and post-retirement advantages.
The Act will be amended by the Bill to state that the former governor would always be eligible for one executive assistant.
The Bill states that during the time the ex-Governor has: (a) been reelected as Governor, (b) been voted to the Parliament or the state assembly, (c) been elected to any position of benefit under the state government or central government, this compensation must not be paid.
