What is cantonment area ?Historically, cantonments were started as permanent military stations or police quarters in British India. In contemporary times, Cantonment can be deemed as a region wherein a military garrison or camp has been set up. A few synonyms of the term are herat, camp, encampment, bivouac, Tientsin, and barracks.
To simplify things for you, the definition of the term cantonment is :1 : usually temporary quarters for troops.
2 : a permanent military station in India.
It is an area where troops of the government are exclusively quartered to keep the armed forces insulated. IT is important as it keeps the armed forces safe and provides them with a place to train.
You must know that the meaning of the term differs from one place to another. You have read the meaning of the term in the Indian Context. To elevate your knowledge, you should know cantonment in the United States context. In the US, a cantonment area is military parlance or "a permanent residential section of a fort or other military installation.
There are approximately 62 Cantonments in India. All of them have been notified under the Cantonments Act, 1924 (succeeded by the Cantonments Act, 2006).
