It is a scheme under which a senior official is appointed by the Reserve Bank of India as the banking ombudsman. The main aim of the ombudsman is to solve or redress the complaints made by customers against certain banking services. The Banking Ombudsman Scheme was launched in Section 35 A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949
What is the role of banking ombudsman?
All the grounds of complaint have been covered under Clause 8 of the Banking Ombudsman Scheme 2006. The main role is to expedite the process of solving complaints related to services rendered by banks to their customers ( new and old ).
There is no cost to filing a complaint under the scheme. RBI has listed around 25 areas on their website under which customers can raise complaints.
A few of them are :
Non-payment of cheques, drafts, bills etc
Delay in payment of inward remittance
Delay to issue drafts, pay orders or bankers’ cheques;
Non-adherence to prescribed working hours etc.
