Owning a home is a human right, but having a shelter overhead is still a dream for millions of people. According to the data provided by the 2011 census, approximately 1.77 million people are homeless in India. For solving the issue the government hosted a campaign ‘HOUSING FOR All’ by the end of 2023. To encourage people for achieving the objective central government has introduced the various scheme which will be discussed further:-

  • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban

Introduced in June 2015 by the government of India., the mission is to achieve the objective “HOUSING FOR ALL’’ in urban areas by the end of 2022. PMAY-G has increased its target to 1 crore homes. Under PMGAY concession of 3% will be given on the interest rate of home loans of up to ₹ 2 Lakh. The concession can be availed for upgrading an existing home or constructing a new house in urban areas. This scheme also focuses on women empowerment by mandating female heads to be the owner under this mission. 

  Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana

The aim is to provide ‘HOUSING FOR ALL’ by 2022 in rural areas at low cost. Under PMGAY aiming to provide a pucca house to all the people living in the dilapidated areas.

  • Rajiv Awas yojana

This scheme was launched with the motive of ‘SLUM FREE INDIA’ in 2009 by bringing all the illegal constructions within a formal system. All the slums were targeted to provide basic necessities for each household like water supply, electricity, also access to washrooms private or public washrooms depending on the surface area. Under this scheme, the government introduced a plan for

Affordable housing in partnership,

with the weaker section of the society. This plan offers to have

 21 to 40 sq. m. surface area  is provided with Central support at the rate of Rs. 75,000 in affordable housing projects taken up under various kinds of partnerships including private partnerships.

  • DDA Housing Scheme

Delhi Development Authority Housing Scheme was launched in December 2018. This scheme offers apartments for every income group of people from high income to the low-income group. Under the DDA housing scheme, some reservations are made for the economically weaker section of the society. The registration fee for LIG house is ₹ 1 Lakh, for MIG and HIG houses the fees is ₹ 2 Lakh, for Janta flats it is ₹ 10,000, for 1BHK it is ₹ 15,000, and for EWS it is ₹ 25,000.

 Tamil Nadu Boarding House Scheme

This scheme started in 1961. Tamil Nadu housing scheme offers shelter to each income group from high to the low-income group.

To purchase shelter under this scheme, people must purchase the application form and then submit the form along with the initial deposit money as specified.
