When you buy a plot for construction or think of renovating a property, you might come across the term site plan quite often. If you are there and wondering what is a site plan then I have you covered. I am an architect and I can give you a detailed explanation on site plan meaning and its importance. What is a site plan?

A site plan is a graphic layout of all the architectural designs and features of the site on a piece of paper. A site plan has details of dimensions, contours, landscapes and other significant features of your land. 

Information included in a site plan

Depending on the scale of the site, these are the things you are likely to find in a site plan:

  • Project name, drawing type, author name, revision number, status, scale used, etc.

  • Information about changes from previous revisions

  • Compass

  • Dimensions, materials

  • Site boundaries and delineation of adjacent properties

  • Building location and surroundings

  • Landscaping information

  • Parking areas with dimensions or capacities, traffic flows, and signage.

  • Roads, footpaths, ramps, paved areas, and so on.

  • A general layout of external services such as drainage, water, gas, electricity, telephone, manhole covers, etc.

  • Details of fencing, walls and gates 

  • The location of miscellaneous external components including bollards, fire hydrants, signage, litter bins, etc.
