What is a cornice board?

As an interior design student, I can tell you what is a cornice board. A cornice board is a decorative wooden or upholstered box-like object that hangs above a window. It helps to conceal curtain rods, drapery hardware, and even blinds. It is typically constructed of wood and features a sturdy frame that is adorned with padding, fabric, or paint.

What are Cornice Boards?

A cornice board is a decorative and structural top decoration for windows. These boards are a stiff, non-flexible valance that may be modified in a broad range of shapes, styles, and sizes to improve the architectural detail and design of a space.

There are 3 types of cornice boards. Those are:

1. Plain Cornice:

   A plain cornice has no detailing on the cornice box's face, and that’s why I think it gives a straightforward, tidy appearance.

2. Cornice with WELT:

   A welt cornice has piping along its top and bottom faces. Piping can be either the same fabric as the cornice for subtle details or a separate material for bold detailing.

3. Cornice with Nail Heads:

   For a highly polished appearance, a cornice with nail heads has ornamental nail heads at the top and bottom of the cornice face.

What distinguishes a cornice from a valance is its construction. Cornices are rigid top treatments, whereas valances are soft, fabric-based window treatments that hang loosely from the top of a window. This is all I know about this board.

A cornice is a wooden framework situated on the top of the windows to envelop hardware. It is also known as pelmet and it has similarities with valances which are also used on top of windows. Cornice boards were in vogue during the Victorian Era. The primary purpose of the cornice board was to hide curtain hardware and provide some protection. Nowadays, cornice board is used to enhance the beauty of the room. This is primarily what is a cornice board.

You can place decorative cornice boards and even customise them. I went to my friend's place where they told me how they customised their cornice boards. I will share some ideas about custom cornice boards designs.

Paint

While painting the cornice board you can add lines to the room. It will add an element to the room if you paint the lines with dark colours. If the wood is painted, choose a colour that you will use sparingly across the room. That way you will maintain the uniformity of the room.

Tufted Look

If you want to create a unique look, you can use a tufted cornice board. They are readily available in the market. By adding some sheer curtains the view of the room will totally change!

Cover with Fabrics

You can use fabrics on the cornice board and create your own designs. You can choose to go for sleek, single-colour designs, or designs that you see in the fabrics.
