I have seen people using different tiles, marbles, cement, sand and more but I thought there is only one type of brick used to construct buildings. However, recently my uncle asked my father about the CMU wall sizes and I had no clue what it was all about. Later my father said that CMU stands for Concrete Masonry Unit and when I researched about it more, I got to know that it is like a brick only. Let me share more details about it here.
What is a cmu wall?
CMU wall is a wall built of cmu or concrete blocks that is made of Portland cement, aggregates and water. A cmu block wall is very much advantageous as they are environment friendly, and protects the interiors against noise pollution by absorbing the sound better. It also gives protection against fire.
In several cases double CMU walls are also built for higher structural strength.
What are the CMU wall sizes?
The sixes of CMU are of thickness- 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 inches or 102, 152, 203, 254, 305, 356 and 406 mm respectively. The standard size of a CMU is 16 inches by 8 inches.
Are CMU walls better than concrete walls?
The answer is no. My father told my uncle not to opt for CMU walls as concrete walls have better lateral strength than CMU block foundations and concrete walls also have resistance to pressure from water and soil.
After knowing CMU wall sizes and more details about it, I hope you will be able to choose yourself which is better.
