Hey there,

MERV rating or the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values rating is a value which is used to compare a filter’s performance. I am quite sure that not many of us are aware of what is MERV rating on filters because it is not a term we use in our daily life. But if you are planning on buying an Air Conditioner, then you must know terms like these and their exact use and meaning. So, do not worry, I am going to help you understand it as easily as possible.

What does the MERV rating on a filter indicate?

The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values, or MERVs, of a filter indicate its capacity to remove particles larger than 0.3 microns (m).

  • This value is useful for evaluating how well certain filters perform.

  • The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers' test technique provides the basis for the rating.

  • The filter performs better at capturing particular sorts of particles of greater MERV rating.

MERV Rating Average Particle Size Efficiency in Microns

HEPA (High efficiency Particulate Air filter)

99.97% of the 0.3 micron and smaller particles

More than 99.97% of magnitude greater or lower than 0.3 microns are successfully collected.

An example of a mechanical air filter with pleats is HEPA. Theoretically, this kind of air filter can eliminate 99.97 percent or more of dust, pollen, mould, germs, and any other airborne particles smaller than 0.3 microns (m). The worst-case scenario is addressed with the dimension specification of 0.3 microns; the most invasive particle size (MPPS). So much more effectively are bigger or smaller particles trapped. The worst case efficiency rating is obtained by using the lowest case particle size .

To operate correctly, all air purifiers need routine cleaning and filter replacement. Observe the manufacturer's instructions for upkeep and replacement and keep a tab on MERV rating for a proper functioning air cooler.
