When I was moving to Bangalore for my first job, my cousin suggested I stay in a PG for the initial few months. He told me that this would help me manage things pretty easily without worrying about things. He also told me to research and learn the PG rules and regulations. So, I looked up the rules and regulations of PG. So, if you are trying to learn about them, then I can help.

What are the PG Hostel Rules and Regulations?

Aarti and Aakshata have already mentioned the rules and regulations of PG, but let me summarise them to make it easier for you to understand.

  1. General Rules and Regulations: You must ensure to pay the PG fees on time. PGs have curfew hours, and you must adhere to them strictly. Along with these, PGs do not allow friends to stay over, and parties are forbidden. Some PGs also have certain food restrictions.

  2. Safety and Security: Submission of two copies of your ID, including a passport-size photo, is necessary. Consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited and can lead to immediate expulsion.

  3. Cleaning: Though regular housekeeping is provided, residents are expected to keep the rooms clean.

Apart from these, there are a few more rules, such as before moving out, you need to inform them one month in advance, etc. I hope you find this helpful.

How to Search for Apartments/PG?

A few years back, my sister relocated to Punjab for her job. She was planning to stay in a paying guest accommodation. It was during this period, that I started my research on the PG rules and regulations by government.

I got to know that the most important paying guest accommodation rules is to obtain a licence from the municipal authority by filling out an application form, which is accessible both online and offline.

The rules and regulations for PG accommodation by the executive committee of Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) are as follows;

  • The home's owner or a member (or members) of his or her family should live there and keep the place neat and tidy.

  • The minimum useable space for one paying guest must be 50 square feet, and there must be enough restrooms available, with one W.C. for five people, in accordance with public health department standards.

  • The home's space designated for paying guests must be at least 8 Marla, and the owner must use a portion of it personally. Only residential premises that have been approved by building byelaws and where no unauthorised development has occurred since the issuance of the completion certificate can offer paying guest accommodations.

  • The owner is liable for upholding order, harmony, and peace on the property as well as in the neighbourhood.

  • Beyond the approved building designs, no further structures or new kitchens can be installed.

  • The owner will display the available and occupied accommodations along with the tariff plan.

  • The list of paying guests must be displayed on the property.

  • The homeowner who is interested in opening a paying guest accommodation should register with the estate officer at GMADA, Mohali so that the estate office can post information about the paying guest accommodations in the town on the GMADA website.

  • As much as feasible, the vehicle should be parked inside the boundaries of the house.

  • The rights and privacy of the nearby residents must not be adversely affected by the usage of paying guest accommodations.

  • In the event of any issue affecting law and order, or a breach of peace and tranquility in the neighbourhood, GMADA might suspend the provision of paying guest accommodations.

I hope this helped you understand the PG rules and regulations by government.

Here are some common paying guest rules and regulations that you may encounter:

  • No Smoking or Drinking:

Several PGs have strict rules banning smoking and drinking on the property. Often, this is done to encourage a smoke-free environment and prevent any potential problems between neighbours.

  • Curfew and Visitor Policies:

Curfews can be in effect at some PGs, requiring inhabitants to return to the premise within a specific time. Likewise, it could be forbidden to let visitors or guests stay for the night.

  • Maintenance and Cleanliness:

Residents are required to keep their rooms tidy, dispose of garbage properly, and not damage anything.

  • Payment and Billing:

PG accommodations usually have specific rules and regulations regarding rent, security deposits, and billing. It's important to be aware of the payment schedule, late fee policies, and refund procedures, if any. This will help avoid any misunderstandings or financial disputes down the line.

  • Code of Conduct:

PG accommodations have a code of conduct that outlines expected behavior and mutual respect among residents. This may include guidelines on noise levels, use of common facilities, and respecting the privacy of fellow residents. Being mindful of these rules and regulations can foster a positive and inclusive living environment.

  • Inaccurate Information:

If inaccurate or partial information is provided, the PG accommodation will be cancelled.

  • Switching off the electrical appliances:

After leaving the rooms, guests are required to turn off the lights, fans, AC, and bathroom geyser to conserve electricity.

  • No damage to the property:

Guests staying at the aforementioned premises shall be held responsible for any costs associated with damages to the property, including any harm done to furniture and fittings as a result of their negligence.

  • Harassment:

Ragging and bullying are strictly forbidden.

Living in a PG comes with its own set of rules and regulations. It's important to familiarise yourself with these PG rules and regulations and abide by them to ensure a pleasant living experience for yourself and your fellow residents. Remember to be respectful, responsible, and cooperative to create a harmonious living environment in your PG accommodation.
