The Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Scheme aims to make Tamil Nadu hut-free by 2030 by replacing existing huts with safe, permanent concrete houses in rural areas. Despite past efforts under the Kalaignar Veedu Vazhangum Thittam, around eight lakh huts still exist. To address this, the new scheme plans to construct eight lakh houses over six years. In the first phase (2024 to 2025), one lakh houses will be built for Rs. 3.5 lakh per house, ensuring better living conditions for rural families.
Under this scheme, every house will have a minimum built-up area of 360 sqft, including the kitchen, with at least 300 sq ft made of reinforced cement concrete.
Each house costs Rs. 3.5 lakh, which covers labour support through MGNREGS for 90 person-days.
An additional 10 person-days are allocated for constructing a household toilet under the Swachh Bharat program, costing Rs. 12,000.
Beneficiaries must possess a land patta in their name. For eligible landless individuals, District Collectors are issuing pattas to ensure their inclusion in the scheme.
This Scheme provides safe and durable housing for rural families while also generating employment through MGNREGS.
