To open an NRI account with ICICI Bank, you need to fulfill certain eligibility criteria and there are also a few ICICI NRI account documents required, that you must submit whether you apply from within India or from abroad. You must be at least 18 years old (minors under 18 can open NRI accounts under guardian arrangements). The status can be Non-Resident Indian (NRI), Person of Indian Origin (PIO), Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), or spouse of one of these.

What are the ICICI Bank NRI Account Opening Documents Required?

Then, the documents required are broadly divided into proof of identity, proof of NRI status / residence, address proof, tax / regulatory paperwork, and KYC. Here are the key ones:

  • You’ll need a valid passport, generally including first and last few pages showing name, date/place of birth, date of issue & expiry, photograph, signature.

  • Visa / Residence Permit / Work Permit: To establish your overseas status or residence abroad (or visa permitting stay abroad).

  • PAN Card or Form 60: This is mandatory for all NRI customers. If PAN is not available, Form 60 may be accepted. The PAN needs to be verified from the issuing authority (such as NSDL).

  • FATCA / CRS Declaration: Because of tax regulations for overseas income and accounts. You’ll have to declare your tax residency, Identification Number (such as TIN), etc.

  • CKYC Annexure: For standardized KYC (Know Your Customer) across Indian banks.

  • Address Proof: Both overseas address (current overseas residence) and sometimes Indian address. Documents like utility bills, bank statements, etc., usually recent (not older than 2-3 months).

If you are opening the account via a non-face-to-face or remote mode (from abroad without visiting a branch), additional verification is required. The identity/address proofs must be self-attested and then certified / notarized by authorised persons abroad (e.g. Notary Public abroad, Indian Embassy / Consulate, or officials of overseas banks with relationships to Indian banks).

My brother is an NRI and he stays in the USA. He recently opened a savings account in ICICI Bank. His NRI account was opened and available for transactions as soon as he submitted the necessary ICICI bank NRI account opening documents required. The main reason for him to open the account was that the current tax laws in India exempt interest income earned on NRE accounts from income tax.

What are the ICICI NRI Account Opening Documents?

He was required to submit the following documents required for NRI account in ICICI;

  • A valid passport photocopy (ID proof)

  • A copy of his permanent account number (PAN) or Form 60.

  • A copy of a current work permit, visa, or overseas resident card (proving one is an NRI)

  • Proof of address with the same address listed on the application

  • Photograph

  • The initial cheque or draft from your account.

By submitting these ICICI NRI account documents required, he was able to open an account via their newly launched 'Online Paperless Account Opening Process' for NRIs and PIOs in the US.
