Hi there,
As far as I know, you can have a domestic meter for a non-commercial garage. But if your garage is or will be used for commercial purposes, you cannot use a domestic meter.
In the midst of the battle against the unauthorised commercialisation of residential areas, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has amassed over Rs. 8.49 crore in fines from 3,232 instances of customers using domestic meters (L1 and L2) for business purposes over the last three years (FY 2020–21 to 2022–23).
Officials claim that users typically misuse household meters for small-scale commercial endeavours. Some homeowners turn a shed or garage into tiny stores, using the same meter for both uses. Some people install playhouses or daycare centres. Rarely, it's also used for construction, according to a BESCOM representative.
