The common query I received recently is: is Syndicate Bank merged. Yes, Syndicate Bank merged with Canara Bank on April 1, 2020. It has since been fully absorbed into Canara Bank with all operations, branches, and services unified under the Canara Bank banner.

Which Bank is Merged with Syndicate Bank?

Canara Bank. Syndicate Bank was established in 1925, later nationalized in 1969. As part of a major PSU banking consolidation announced in August 2019 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, 10 public-sector banks were merged into four larger entities to create stronger, more efficient institutions.

Specifically, Syndicate Bank was merged into Canara Bank to form the fourth-largest public-sector bank in India by business size and branch network.

The legal amalgamation took effect on April 1, 2020. From that date onward:

  • All Syndicate Bank branches became Canara Bank branches.

  • Customers’ deposits, accounts, and services automatically migrated under Canara Bank operations.

  • Syndicate Bank IFSC codes remained temporarily valid but were fully replaced by Canara Bank’s “CNRB…” codes by July 1, 2021.

  • Account numbers remained the same but are now serviced through the Canara Bank platform.

All banking services (savings, loans, remittances) are under Canara Bank’s systems and net‑banking. You must now use Canara Bank IFSC codes for NEFT/RTGS/IMPS transfers.
