When I first moved to Bangalore for my work, I was pretty confused about: Is rent per person or per room? On discussing with a few of my friends, I learned that rent per person or per room ultimately depends on the property that you are renting and how the rent agreement is set up between the landlord and tenants.

Is Rent Per Person or Per Room?

Here there are 2 set up that I found:

  1. Firstly, rent is generally assessed per unit for an entire apartment, thus the total rent covers the entire house or apartment. After that, roommates split it up either equally or according to the facilities and size of the space. For example, someone may pay a little more for a room with a balcony or attached bathroom.

  2. Secondly, the rent is usually per person if you're renting a room in a shared apartment. This is common for furnished arrangements or co-living areas when services are also provided.

It is best that you have a clearly defined rent agreement that keeps things transparent and avoids awkward money talks later.
