One of the best ways to incorporate some natural elements into your house is to garden. Like you, I am also looking for gardening with plywood boxes. As I was unsure is plywood safe for raised beds, I researched it. I found that although plywood can be used for raised garden beds, it is not advised. There are several potential issues behind it, which I added below.

Issues with Gardening with Plywood Boxes

  1. They can be hard to assemble and harder to maintain.

  2. When plywood is exposed to soil and moisture, it may decay quite quickly. It has a 1 to 2-year lifespan.

  3. Additionally, if the glue's chemicals break down, they might seep into the ground and poison water.

I am not sure if they could get into the roots of the plants and poison the fruits, but I wouldn't want to risk it. So, I planned not to use plywood for raised beds and go with pine or redwood.

If

you plan to use plywood, consider coating the bed with a sturdy plastic liner to prevent soil contact and potential

leaching.
