Last month, I hired a professional interior designer for my new house. During our conversation, he asked me to choose between plywood and drywall for partitions and false walls. I was slightly aware that plywood is stronger, but I want to keep the costs low. So, I asked him, is plywood cheaper than drywall. He said no, plywood is expensive compared to drywall. He has also shared the difference between plywood and drywall, which I shared below.

Key Differences between Plywood and Drywall

  1. In general, plywood costs more than drywall.

  2. Plywood requires specialized installation. However, drywall is easier to install.

  3. Plywood doesn't require anchors to support heavier loads because of its strength. However, the smooth surface that drywall offers makes it perfect for painting.

  4. The type of plywood determines its fire resistance. FRTW (fire-retardant treated wood) plywood is more costly than ordinary plywood. However, drywall provides adequate fire resistance.

Drywall is a superior option if cost is your top priority. However, choose plywood if you require the extra durability and strength. I finally chose plywood as it is worth the additional expense.
