Hey buddy. Since summer is approaching, I am planning to buy an air conditioner unit for my house. So, a few weeks ago, I was looking into the best AC, where I came across the term Freon. It is a brand of refrigerant gas made up of several compounds, including chlorofluorocarbons. When I researched, is Freon still used in air conditioners, I found manufacturers mostly phased out Freon. Let me share the reasons.
Is Freon Still Used in Home Air Conditioners?
No. I found air conditioners made before 1996 widely used Freon, but manufacturers have since largely phased it out. Freon is harmful to the environment since it includes CFCs that destroy ozone. The Clean Air Act prohibited its use in new devices. The EPA passed it in 2010. Therefore, the following refrigerants types you can typically find in modern AC systems:
R-134a,
R-32,
R-410 (Puron),
R-454b (Puron Advanced)
Even while modern air conditioners no longer use Freon, certain older models can still contain this refrigerant. In these situations, I found we must properly dispose of and recycle Freon to prevent it from seeping into the atmosphere and causing more ozone layer damage. I hope your query, is Freon still used in AC units, should be solved.
