One evening, I was putting food out for the stray dogs in our housing society when a few neighbours questioned if it was allowed. I said yes, feeding stray dogs in housing society is allowed under Indian law. But it must be done in fixed feeding spots decided by the society committee and in a way that does not disturb others. There are some rules for this, which I have added for your reference.

What are the Requirements for Feeding Sites and the Duties of Feeders?

  1. If you are feeding stray dogs in our housing society, ensure the feeding spots are not near children’s play areas, entrances, exits, stairs, or landings.

  2. Don’t use public streets or pedestrian footpaths.

  3. Put up a clear signboard showing the feeding time.

  4. The best spots are near the boundary wall or in quiet corners.

  5. And remember, we need more than one feeding spot because dogs are territorial.

  6. After feeding, please clean up and remove all leftovers.

  7. Give only clean, safe food, not raw or uncooked meat.

  8. Avoid feeding between 11:30 PM and 5:00 AM.

  9. Support sterilization and vaccination drives to keep the dogs healthy and the society safe.

Feeding stray dogs is a good thing, but we all need to do it the right way. If we follow these simple rules, everyone in society stays happy and safe.
