In India, if a landlord absconds without refunding the lease amount, you can take legal action under civil and criminal laws. Since you already lodged a police complaint, you should now file a civil suit for recovery of money and damages in the appropriate court.
Additionally, you may file a criminal case for cheating and breach of trust under IPC provisions. If you have a lease agreement, receipts, or bank records, these will strengthen your case.
Engaging a lawyer to issue a legal notice and pursue recovery through the court is the most effective remedy in such situations.

I stayed in a leased properly for a year by paying a lease amount of 9.5 lakhs. However the house was not in a liveable condition hence we vacated the house by giving a verbal notice to the landlord, but he has only returned 3 lakh rupees and even after multiple requests he has not returned the money that was paid. Now he has absconded with the money and he has sold his house and has moved and we are unaware of his whereabouts. We had lodged a complaint but it was of no use. Please advise what should I do to get my money back?
