In India, the liability for municipal taxes generally falls on the property owner at the time the tax is due. Since the possession of the property was transferred to you on 6/08/2021, you would typically be responsible for the municipal taxes from that date onwards1.
However, it's important to review the specific municipal laws and regulations in your area, as they can vary. It might also be helpful to consult with a legal expert or contact your local municipal corporation for clarification.
Responsibility for Municipal Taxes- From the Possession Date:
As the flat owner, you are generally responsible for municipal taxes starting from the date you took possession of the property. This is because municipal taxes are typically levied on the property owner at the time the tax is due.
- Pending Taxes Before Society Transfer:
The builder was in control of the property and society until the official transfer date. If the municipal taxes were not paid during this period, you could argue that the builder should bear the responsibility for any unpaid taxes up to the transfer date.
- After Society Transfer:
After the society transfer date, the responsibility for paying municipal taxes typically shifts to the individual property owners.

I am the flat owner of the 401 carpet area property. I got possession on 6/08/2021 but at that time I did not get the bill of municipal tax and after 3 years builders transfer the society to the members on 2/06/2024. He had not paid municipal tax till now. He has given us the bill of a municipal tax on 22/01/2025 which shows the pending municipal taxes from the possession date. Who are liable to pay muncipal taxes?
