Q.

I am in 11 months rent agreement with 6 months locking period, so can I give 1 month notice on 5th month and after completion of 6 months I can leave? Here my landlord is saying that I cannot give notice till 6 months, that is only possible after 6 months so ideally he is asking for 7 months rent. Please suggest.

If my understanding is correct, a lock in period is a period during which neither the landlord nor the tenant can terminate the agreement. Since you have a lock in period of 6 months, I think you can give notice to your landlord in the fifth month. That way in case your notice period is of 1 month then you can leave the premises after the expiry of the lock in period immediately.

I would still suggest you to go through your agreement carefully to confirm that there are no other clauses preventing you from doing so. Further you can consult with a rental agreement expert to understand what you should do ultimately.
