Mix white latex paint with water for a semi-transparent finish. Test a small area, apply with the grain, and wipe excess for a weathered look. Add a second coat if needed and seal with matte polyurethane for durability.

Hello Tarini. I will be able to help you out with how to whitewash wood panel walls. You can find the method below.

  1. Get your supplies ready. White latex paint, water, wide brush, rags, sandpaper, drop cloth and painter's tape.

  2. Then, mix paint and water in equal amounts in a bucket and stir until smooth.

  3. Prepare next. Lay drop cloths everywhere and tape the baseboards or trims. Sand glossy panels lightly to rough up the surface, then wipe dust with a damp rag. Dry completely.

  4. Brush mix on a hidden spot to test first. Wait a couple of minutes and wipe away the excess. If the grain feels good, you can move ahead, but if it looks too white, add more water.

  5. Then, brush the mixture generously with grain and apply on the groove first. Wait for like 1 to 3 minutes till it soaks in slightly.

  6. Use a clean rag, and wipe excess off immediately. For more whiteness, apply light pressure and if you want a subtle look, wipe with extra pressure

  7. Apply 2 coats, let it dry for 2 to 4 hours and repeat for even coverage. Sand lightly between if bumpy.

  8. Seal to protect. Brush water based polyurethane thin.

This is all.

If you want to know a few beginners friendly steps on how to whitewash wood panel walls, follow these pointers;

  1. To keep your flooring safe, lay down a drop cloth.

  2. After giving the paneling a thorough cleaning to get rid of any dust or filth, lightly sand it to help the whitewash stick evenly.

  3. For a light, semi-transparent appearance, mix equal parts water and white latex paint in a bucket.

  4. Reduce the water a little for a more opaque finish. Give it a good stir.

  5. Always start with a small, hidden piece to test. Adjust your paint-to-water ratio if needed.

  6. Dip your brush into the mixture and apply with long, even strokes following the grain. To regulate the covering, remove the excess with a fresh cloth.

  7. For a more weathered effect, wait a few minutes before wiping.

  8. If you want more coverage, let the first coat dry fully, then apply a second coating the same way.

  9. Just be cautious not to overdo it; you still want the wood grain to peek through.

  10. If your paneling is in a high-traffic area, try sealing it with matte polyurethane for extra longevity without adding gloss.

I hope this helps!
