By letting air into the plumbing system, vents guarantee that water runs freely and stop vacuums from forming. Also, it helps in keeping sewer gasses out of the house. There are 3 types of vents: Wet Vent, Dry Vent, and Air Admittance Valve (AAV). Though I have shared the basic steps on how to vent a basement bathroom plumbing, it is best that you hire a plumber to tackle this job.

How to Vent a Toilet in a Basement?

The first step is to design the Vent Path. Before joining the main vent stack, vents should ideally flow vertically above the flood level of the topmost fixture. The other steps are as follows:

  1. The Drain-Waste-Vent (DWV) system should be installed:

  2. Toilet: Needs a vent and a 3-inch drain pipe. The vent should extend through the roof or connect to the main vent stack.

  3. Sink: An AAV can be used; typically, a 1½-inch pipe should be used for ventilation.

  4. Tub: A 2-inch drain line with a vent within five feet of the trap is necessary for showers and tubs.

  5. Connect to Existing Vent Stack:

If you are connecting to an existing stack, make sure the horizontal run slopes upward toward the main vent at ¼ inch per foot. It is because S-traps can siphon water and result in sewage gas leaks, use P-traps instead.

  1. Final Examinations and Verifications:

Check for leaks by running water through the system. Prior to wall closure, the majority of sections need a plumbing examination.

To pass vent pipes through concrete slabs in basements, core drilling may be necessary; and for this, it’s best that you contact experts. Hope this helps!
