Last month, I unclogged our kitchen sink drain using the plumbing snake, so I can tell you the complete process. However, if you’re even slightly hesitant and not sure how to go about it, I’d recommend getting in touch with a professional plumber. I learned the process by watching some videos online, so let me share

how to use plumbing snake in kitchen pipes. The first thing to do is to disconnect the p-trap from under the sink.

How to Unclog Kitchen Sink Drain with a Plumbing Snake?

So, you need a few pieces of equipment for this process. This includes a small bucket, channel locks or pipe wrench, hand auger or moto-driven snake, and flashlight too. Here’s how I could unclog our sink drain.

  1. As I mentioned above, I disconnected the p-trap first and checked if there were any clogs there. It was clean, so I pulled a 12 to 15 inch cable out of the snake.

  2. I pushed the cable into the drain line. I knew you must be able to see into the T-fitting. At first, I wasn’t able to see anything, so I called my brother to listen to the wall while I cranked the handle.

  3. He could hear it going up into the vent. I pulled out the cable and re-inserted it to ensure it was going down.

  4. I continued feeding the cable until I felt the clog. When you feel the clog, tighten the set screw at the front of the snake.

  5. Then, I again pushed the cable forward while cranking the handle clockwise.

  6. You must continue this process until you break up the clog completely. When you no longer feel any resistance, it means that the clog is cleared.

  7. After everything was cleared, I removed the cable from the pipe and fed the cable back into the spool. This prevents grease on the snake from splashing around.

So, that’s how I could clear out the clogs. I hope this gives you enough clarity.
